If I lived in Pittsburgh, I would spend every free moment taking pictures of little houses on hills. It's probably for the best that I live somewhere flat.

Out in the big snow

I spend so much time making the kid impervious to the cold that I often fail to dress myself warm enough for how much time she wants to spend out there (not to mention the fact that I don't seem to own any gloves). At one point she and the dog were staring at me like this and I felt like those guys at the beginning of White Fang who were being followed by hungry wolves.

Tropical Garage

The weatherpeople are frothing at the mouth today in front of their blue screens, they are so excited. We're supposed to get NINE INCHES OF SNOW IN JUST A FEW HOURS.

For several days the favorite game has been "crawl around the house and spy on each other around corners and under things." He loves it when I pretend to crawl around just like he does. The only thing he likes better is spying me someplace he didn't expect to find me.

Smoked pork leg

I know you don't come to this blog to see pictures of dogs balancing items on their noses, but, well, I bought this pig's leg at the market for him the other day and couldn't resist an homage. I made him sit there with it on his nose for like ten minutes because yo, that thing was like $2.00 and he needed to earn it.

Saw this on the side of an abandoned-looking church while I was driving around the sidestreets in town. Swoon visited Braddock and installed some of the same art she put up in the Cass Corridor of Detroit.

This one was particularly beautiful, I thought.

Bell's Market (Braddock, Pennsylvania)

I am still trying to write about this town of Braddock, Pennsylvania. Wood's father used to live there and it is a pretty amazing little place. I'll have something next week.

I didn't intend to take this photo, and didn't even know I had until I looked over what was on the card. I must have accidentally pressed the shutter while putting the camera back in my bag after taking some follow-up photographs of the ghetto pieta (it's still there, still looks great). If you're in Pittsburgh and want to see it for yourself, the cross streets are Brownsville and Amanda Ave. (maybe half a block north on Amanda).

Arlington Avenue, Pittsburgh

I walked about sixteen miles around Pittsburgh last Thursday before the big meal, and one or more of them was all the way down Arlington to the Monongahela Incline, hoping to take a couple pictures of these houses impossibly situated along the busy road on the edge of the cliff. The coolest one is being renovated and had a big ugly dumpster in front of it, but this one is still pretty cool. What a view! Pittsburghers who live like this always seem to be adding floors and extra porches to their homes. Who can blame them.

We're back from Thanksgiving weekend in Pittsburgh. I took about 700 photos walking the dog around the neighborhoods around my father-in-law's house in the South Side Slopes, as well as a trip I took over to Homestead, Braddock, and McKeesport. I'm trying to write about my thoughts visiting this region where the decline of the steel industry turned so many communities into ghost towns, but I'm afraid everything I write turns into a damn essay and no one wants to read an essay on a blog. I will try to have something up later this week.

But the pictures! Those are easier. Pittsburgh is such a beautiful city.
