We returned from our vacation to find two raised beds like this one full of open sunflowers, as well as several blooming in pots around our garden project. This was a dirt lot last summer, and thinking about that makes me happy.

With all due respect to Ms. Comstock and all the other women who've won the title of Michigan's top homemaker award since 1890-whatever, the time may have come for a dark-horse candidate. With balls. According to the article, the winner takes home "a trophy, a crystal dish, a $100 gift certificate, a tiara, a sash and a bouquet of red roses."
