Oh winter in Detroit. . .the tree is lit at Campus Martius, the skaters are circling 'round the public rink, the Santa at the Renaissance Center asks my daughter if she still likes Dora, and the dog gangs finally emerge from the vacant houses where they've been hiding all year.

It's funny how determined kids can be to enjoy the snow when it's still a seasonal novelty. It was eleven degrees outside when I took this picture. It was like a Jack London short story out there. She's wearing four pairs of pants under the snowsuit and at least three sweaters. I had to cajole her into the house with promises of hot chocolate. In a couple months, we'll be so sick of the stuff we'll never leave the house. But for now. . .

Strangely enough, just a few days after I posted a photo of the Brush park "castle" (also known as the Luben Apartment Building) and wrote about what a wreck it was inside, a suspicious fire broke out in the building and within a few hours demolition crews were there to level it. In a city filled with corrupt politicians and greedy demolition contractors, theories abound about how quickly this happened (before preservationists could even rally to save the facade). It's a huge loss to the neighborhood and the city.
