Holy shit we've been to Yuppie Heaven. And we brought back two quarts of maple syrup.

Oh Buffalo, You Could Keep Me Busy

Posted by jdg | 1:16 PM

. . .too bad I took a whole day's worth of photos in Buffalo before I remembered I'd set the ISO to 3200 the evening before. Rookie mistake. Bring the noise.

At least got my fill of beef on weck.

Pickup Artist

This truck reminded me of that line from The Blair Witch Project: "No Redneck is this creative." Indeed, the only people around were a bunch of South Asian dudes working a fleabag motel. I hoped this was some kind of effort to start this trend in Washtenaw County.

Bumperboats

Either the lady running the bumperboat concession at the Monroe County Fair forgot about my daughter, or she so enjoyed watched the kid's clueless steering that she let her stay on the water until the thing ran out of juice (at least 20 minutes).

And look at that hair! She had the thinnest hair for the longest time but now it looks like a goddamn Suave commercial.

Tats

So we were at a rest area on the Ohio turnpike the other day and one of those sticker/temporary tattoo dispensers by the arcade games has a Pegasus tattoo prominently displayed. I ended up spending like three dollars to get that stupid Pegasus tattoo, and we ended up with a mitt full of the tacky ones that kept thwarting my effort to get Pegasus. When I saw that the kindermullet is almost back I remembered it was county fair season so I pulled out the wife beater and tatted up the boy. The girl, of course, wanted her own so she wanders the Monroe County Fair like some broad with a reality show about her temporary tattoo parlour on TLC.

I swear the machine gave us some temporary tramp stamps. "If that had some Chinese letters you could be just like your mom," I groaned.

More pictures from the fair to come.

Flower girl

Posted by jdg | 10:58 AM

On Saturday the kid was a flower girl at her Uncle Ryan's wedding. At the bride's specific request, she wore a flower crown, purple Converse All-Star hightops, and a purple tutu. And wings. Can you think of a better way to convince a 4-year old that THE BRIDE IS ALWAYS RIGHT?

Wood made the tutu for her and the other flower girl.

I have written before about the number of journalists that have descended on Detroit. It seems like you can't chuck an empty bag of potato chips out the car window these days without hitting some documentary filmmakers. I don't get it. They are all here to tell "the Detroit story" and they all e-mail me for advice before they come into town. I seriously get 3-5 e-mails a week from different people who all seem to be making the same documentary. Last week I received an email from some woman in Hollywood who wants to pitch a TV Series about a group of unemployed Canadian auto workers who win a $38 million lottery and decide to "buy Detroit." Some of this shit is so insulting it doesn't even merit a response.

I've started turning the camera on these people and have a nice little collection of shots featuring journalists all photographing and documenting the same old Detroit cliches. This French crew seemed pissed until they recognized me (I'd corresponded and even met with the dude to show him where I'd seen foxes and other animals) and he shouted, "Sweet? Is that you?" Check out their faces:

Bonjour, motherfuckers.
