Feral Dog

We've been hanging out a lot lately next to this "feral building" where one wall has been completely taken over by ivy (you can see it in a few of the pictures in this post, and I hope to write about what we've been doing up there later this week). The only time our pup Wendell ever runs away from us is when he hears a firecracker. Years ago, when we first rescued him, some teenager jackass threw a firecracker right at him and he pulled the leash right out of my hand and disappeared. After an hour of searching, we found him hiding under an SUV in front of our house. I have often wondered if he is gun shy, and that's why such a beautiful hunting dog was dumped on the streets of Detroit.

The other day some kids were setting off firecrackers nearby, and Wendell disappeared. Terrified, we began to search all over until we noticed his tongue flickering amid the vines against the building not twenty feet away. We called his name, and he poked his head out a bit further. What a baby. . .

Technically, Thor's wagon was pulled by two mighty he-goats (Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr), but sometimes you just have to improvise.

In my opinion, the best bookstore anywhere. Lemony Snicket was in line behind us when paid for eight or nine books that we discovered thanks to the always-excellent staff recommendations.
Such a dignified pose for such an undignified text.
This store wasn't there when we lived in the neighborhood, but if it was I might have dressed better.
Why take your kid to the real aquarium when you can take them to the crazy awesome free Chinese one?
Genki Crepes, with obligatory overpriced Japanese gewgaw purchase.
We were so happy when the Velo Rouge Cafe opened down the block from us in one of those seemingly cursed commercial buildings. So glad to see it still in business. I recommend the Lone Mountain.
The line was out the door and on the counter there were a half dozen recent articles from regional magazines about the turkey sandwiches at the Arguello Super. The secret's out, I guess. How lucky were we to live within a block of this? Dutch Crunch, mayo, no mustard, extra pickles.
We took our turkey sandwiches up into Golden Gate Park for a picnic.
